We are installing Cisco 4110 within the next couple weeks.  Any tricks or tips to get optimized performance out of SolarWinds with these?

Also .... What interface on the 4110 are you monitoring?   Our rep told the chasis monitor will not provide any information but that was the only interface on the 4110 that we can get SW to communicate with.

THWACK [Mini] Mission: "X" Marks the Spot

A fountain of database enlightenment awaits you, but will you embark on this mission to find it?

As lore would have it, a DBA’s treasure of performance intelligence was said to exist in the data center, yet was never found. But now, thanks to intriguing database discovery, the tables are turned and its riches are now within your reach. Grab your trusty mug and prepare to cast off from your current environment in search of enlightened database performance and desirable loot (aka cool prizes).

Sources tell you that Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) 12.0 has the map you’re seeking. Start exploring with Query Performance Analyzerand you’ll find that continual monitoring for inefficient query data access can take the heavy lifting off your shoulders. Database Performance Analyzer can also help you find the queries causing the database engine (and your systems) to work really hard for very little return. Look for Table Tuning Advisors along the way. Discover how you can aggregate the workload from those queries at the table level, supplying the necessary information to help make better proactive tuning and optimization decisions.

Go forth and navigate perilous low ROI queries, missing indexes, and table workloads to dig into a wealth of correlation and analysis. “X” marks the spot for optimizing your database performance!

Start the mission now for a chance to increase your knowledge and win prizes. Good luck!

https://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/7105

I'm not entirely certain that this is the right place for this, as it's not a new feature request, but more of a proposed minor modification of an existing feature. I had just noticed that the steps between levels seemed odd to me, with some sharp increases followed by plateaus, and at the higher levels, it taking fewer points to gain a level than at some of the lower ones. So I played with the numbers a bit and came up with what looked to me to be a smoother progression curve. It does still plateau a bit at the higher levels so that no level increase would require more than 50,000 points and so that the point total for level 30 would remain unchanged at 500,000 points. Graphs included because they were easy and why not.

Alert for response time - use average or current?

$

Working on an alert for response time using NPM v10.7. If I am correct, the warning and critical response time thresholds that I can set on the Node edit properties page are related to "current" response time. If my trigger condition is pointed to the variable Response Time and the Trigger must be sustained for 4 minutes (2 polls), why am I not seeing any alerts when I have a node that has been above the critical threshold for several polls in a row?

Do you use any IM in work at all or maybe some fancy collaboration platform instead?

Custom SQL Variable

$

If I write a custom SQL variable for the Advanced Alert Engine to use to populate information from more than one field in the database:

${SQL:select...}

... it seems to only report back the first value.

Example:
${SQL:select NodeID, IP_Address, DNS from nodes where nodeid like '1' or nodeid like '2'}

This returns a value of '1'.

We are trying to use this to populate information for multiple devices in a cluster when an alert fires one of the device in that cluster.

Is this possible?

Thanks,
Jason Henson

Not Another AI Post...

$

Modern network and systems engineers have a lot to deal with. Things like overlapping roles, constantly changing client devices, and new applications popping up daily create headaches beyond comprehension. The amount of data produced by packet captures, application logs, and whatever else you have to help troubleshoot issues is astounding and can leave even the most skilled engineer reeling when trying to track down an issue. The human brain is designed to recognize patterns and outliers, but it is simply not equipped to deal with the scale of today’s IT issues.

Over the past few years, data scientists and software developers have teamed up to try to solve this problem using an old paradigm but emerging technology: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI from this point on). AI, put simply, is a program that is “trained” to monitor a given data set while looking for either specific or unspecific information contained within. By scouring the data, it can build complicated patterns and baselines, learning along the way what is “normal” for a given system and what isn’t, as well as forming predictions based on what could be coming next. From there, a few things can happen; from as little as flagging the information for later review by human eyes all the way up to a completely automated remediation of any notable issues discovered.

Right now, you’re either thinking “Sign me up! I want to AI!” or “Not another one of these…” And I don’t blame you. I’m all AI-ed out too. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. Just do what I do when I hear yet another marketing person start talking about the rise of the machines. Cover your ears and yell. I don’t care about how a vendor is going to get something done, I just want to know what it will do for me. I’m a wireless network architect, a coder, and a technology lover. I am not a data scientist. Make my job easier and I’ll be your best friend at lunch (which you’re paying for). What can AI do for me and you as the ones keeping the lights on and moving our companies forward technologically?

The most basic use case I’ve come across is historical data correlation and actionable health prediction. Like I mentioned, I’m a wireless architect. I design and manage a massive wireless network across a large geographic area. Monitoring the network, applications, RF, and performance of hundreds of thousands of clients across the entire organization isn’t just a difficult job -- it’s impossible for a single group to do without some serious assistance. The tribal knowledge contained within each team I work with is impossible to impart on a single person or persons to monitor everything and correlate all that information into any sort of useful data. That’s where AI comes in. Using historical trends to predict new needs, looking at past failures to see when the next one will occur, knowing that certain events or even times of the year will cause application load we can’t handle, we can properly scale and prepare for nearly anything.

Now, as I mentioned above, I’m not a data scientist but I have no problem letting them make my job easier. As much as I hate the term AI (I’ll explain in a later post) and the marketing drives me crazy, I am welcoming it with open arms. I am also waiting with a baseball bat to take it down if anything goes wrong.

This is the first post in a series I will be writing about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, which will cover how I use it, why I love it, why it terrifies me, and why words matter. Stay tuned for more. I promise it won’t be too dull.

New item for THWACK Shop

I recently received a set of the TWHACK buttons from the shop and I noticed how perfectly they fit (with a little velcro) with the little metal desk fans that have become popular.    I'm thinking the combination of a fan with some buttons would be an awesome item for the THWACK store.   I know I'd buy one.

how to fix "job Scheduler v2 Results Notified Error" alert?

One of our APE was down for quite some time and wasn't able to communicate to Main Poller. Once the APE was back up, we received an alert for "job Scheduler v2 Results Notified Error" as 71K. I understand this was due to APE not being able to communicate to Mail poller and Database but how do we fix this or what actions need to be taken to clear them up?

I would like to be able to compare server configurations.  For example, we have clusters of servers and they should have identical configurations, so it would be useful to be able to get a dif of two or more servers to see differences easily. This would include applications, files, IIS configs, etc.

IPAM API to update subnet data?

$

Hi

I am new to Solarwinds IPAM and its API, and in the descriptions, it says that the API can do CRUD operations with subnets.  When I looked at it, it references the subnet and parent data as SubnetID and ParentID.  How do find out what the SubnetID for a subnet is?  Also, how do I find the ParentID for the group?  My main goal currently is to be able to move subnets into groups based on their location data.  I can script it myself to put it into the group I want, so I don't need the script to figure that logic out.  As long as I can script it so that I can move a subnet into a group I am happy   Can someone help guide me in the right direction in accomplishing this?  Thank you.

Orion Reports - Something Other Than Excel 2003 Format

I don't see any option to save scheduled reports from Orion in any format other than Excel 2003 (XLS). I know CSV and PDF are options, but they are not feasible.

Is there a way to save in a not-so-antiquated Excel format (XLSX)? If not, might there be a feature request out there that I can add on to?

Determine Group Membership From Node Page

$

Hi All,

This is possibly an easy one, but I can's seems to find a way to display information on a node page about which group this particular node belongs to. I have a lot of groups for different purpose. Many are used for my dashboard. When node is down - I just want to see which groups are affected. I can probably achieve it with reports, but I would like this to be available straight on the node page. Something like:

"This node is a member of the following groups:"

Group01

Group02

etc.

Thanks,

Alex

Display "poll now" button without administrator rights

$

Actually the "poll now" button appears :

- for node view when you have "Allow Node Management Rights" checked.

- for application monitor  when you have "SAM User Role" = Admin.

The idea is to have the possibility to enable the option for accounts without giving administrator rights.

For example we have an team dedicated to alerts treatment. I don't want them to be administrator.

When an alert is triggered, they have to apply a procedure. And they need to wait for the next poll to close the ticket/to be sure that the procedure works.

With the "poll now" (without being admin), they can force the next app monitor check and close the ticket.
