It would be great if, when you add a Node to NCM,  all the jobs are listed and you can check a box to add the node to each job.

Availability Report - extending sample interval

Hi,

In web based Report Writer, the maximum sample interval in custom chart resource  is 7 days. (for availability report)

It would be useful to have the option to get a monthly availability point for the year.

What do you think about this ?

WPM User Journey monitor fails due to change in the URL at a particular step

We have a user journey monitoring of a particular URL, where in the URL that is being monitored changes at one step. After the user journey is setup and assigned to a player, we see that the transaction keeps fluctuating (up & down) even after performing several remediation steps.

when we login to a URL and enter credentials we are taken to a page where we have to select a report to be executed.when we click on appropriate options, a pop window opens to select required report and run it. However, at the step where a pop window opens, the transaction keeps failing every couple of minutes. In order to avoid these failures, we have added a 10 sec time wait before going to the next action but it has not fixed the issue. Is there a way we can get such issues fixed because we have multiple such User Journeys that keep on failing because of such a constraint (that the URL changes in mid of a user journey?)

Ability to add Web Based reports to a Summary View

$

The current resource for generating a report in a view only allows you to select reports that have been created using the Report Writer on the server, it would be really neat if you could also choose from reports that have been generated using the Web Console. This would allow you to include reports in the rotating NOC views that were introduced in v10.7

Additionally, this could also be solved by allowing resources in a Summary/NOC/Interface/etc. view to be arranged in the same way that reports are. Instead of three static columns, it would be nice to add a "section" which can have as many columns as you want. These sections are completely independent of each other in terms of spacing.

NPM Agent and SCCM

We can successfully deploy the agent for Agent Initiated monitoring with SCCM using an MSI and MST, but it fails to create the SolarWinds node object.

The service runs, but never makes the node.

if you go into Control Panel and enter a valid set of SolarWinds credentials...

magic, it works:

How do we either set the credentials in the MST or programmatically update the User/PW?
We have 500 ATMs, 1500 servers and 5000+ laptops and desktops to bring in. Going one by one is NOT an option.

Thanks

Custom chart with individual interfaces and a combined total on one chart

I'm trying to create a custom chart that has the bandwidth utilization average % of 2 individual interfaces located on two different routers, and on that same chart, have both interfaces' utilization combined and represented as one line, into one graph.  I've been able to produce the charts individually, but how can i combine these two to present all this data on one graph?  The two pictures below show "Custom Chart", which has the two interfaces i'm curious about grouped together, the "ISP_Circuit", shows the individual interfaces (and has one additional interface that i don't need the stats on).

Please enhance NCM "Last XX Config Changes" with a searchbar

Hi

NCM "Last XX Config Changes" is great tool.

It could be even better if we could "fine tune"  what type of  change  is  more important to the user/admin.

Sure like search for some changes/events/keywords ...and trigger alert or set those changes with other colors?

That is more  "ad Hoc" to help you "color"  security risk where compliance is more the long term picture.

study case security team/admin:

I getting  alot of changes in my networks "don't care about what interface or VLAN has change"

I do care about "change in the system setting (radius /SSH/SNMP/SYSLOG) and FW changes..

Ability to view/show "SQL Query" on Orion Web Based Reports

Earlier Report Writer tool we have ability to see the SQL Query after we design a report in Report Writer, the same feature if provided in Web Based Reports will be very helpful and powerful.

With this feature we will know behind the scenes what SQL query is generated for a report, which can be used to customize the reports more.

Old Report Writer:

To view the SQL content of Report Writer Origin report - you can still view it on Report Writer (RDP to Orion Server >> Open Report Writer >> select the report >> Report (menu bar) >> show SQL)

Refer the thread to understand this idea:

How can I get the SQL used to generate a report now that we have migrated to the web based report writer?

Ability to control Application Availability.

$

Known fact as of now, that Application availability in SolarWinds SAM depends on status of any single component in that Application, where if one component is down in the Application Template then the availability is becoming 0% for that application.

Refer existing behavior of SAM Application Availability: Application availability and status

We need ability to control the Availability of the Application, where if one component is down the availability should not become 0%.

Eg: Let's say we have Application Template with 10 components (maybe some important URLs monitored using HTTP monitor), we generate daily/weekly report to have Availability of this application, if single component is down then the whole Application Availability is showing as 0%, where as if one URL is down under that application then it should be 90%.

A10 Layer3 partition SNMP polling support

A10 allows you to poll the Layer3 partitions (though the Shared partition IP) by adding the partition name into the SNMP string (e.g. snmpstring@partition), but NPM only allows a single SNMP string per node.  It would be nice if we could have the option to override the node SNMP string with a new SNMP string with a UnDP

A Fool’s Errand: Standardizing DevOps Tools

$

The other day, as is often the case when an engineer is deep in a troubleshooting task that requires a restart if interrupted, I got a request for advice. “Hey, if you have a second I wanted to ask a question about standardizing DevOps tools. Should my friend use Chef, Puppet, or something else to get DevOps going?” He couldn't understand task-switch loss, so I did my best impression of the wisest help desk gurus on THWACK. I took a breath, found a smile, and answered the question.

“Standardizing” the tools of DevOps is anathema to the goal of DevOps; a bad habit carried over from old-school, under-resourced IT. With waterfall-based, help desk interrupt-driven, top-down IT, there’s too often a belief that if only the organization would adopt a Magic Tool, all would be well. DevOps, and more correctly the Agile principals that beget DevOps as an outcome, is bigger than a tool, vendor, or any technology.

For an organization to successfully make DevOps work, especially to achieve its promise of breaking logjams blocking the digital transformation enterprise so desperately wants, standardizing Agile principles and methods should be the real goal. For example, if the Ops team adopts Scrum and comes to value ScrumMasters who resist corrupting urges to grow scope after sprints begin, it doesn’t matter if the team chooses Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or AWS or Azure services for automation.

If critical teams standardize on methods that result in predictable, quality outcomes, they can each choose the tools that work best for them, or change them as needed to take advantage of new features. Tools selection or replacement becomes just one more element in the product backlog, to be balanced against business goals, like everything else. It substantially reduces the tendency to paralyze the team waiting on The Penultimate Tool of the Ages, before it can even get started.

Where standardizing DevOps methods over tools really pays off is assured quality. If a team standardizes on a principle of Minimal Acceptable Monitoring, they will ensure throughout Dev, testing, deployment, and Ops that the right tools are used to quantify performance and user experience. This crucial measure of service quality then informs sprint goals, increasing quality and even efficiency over time. Even better, by adopting effective, (verses impossibly idealized), Continuous Deployment, IT can help ensure DevOps, in which often overlooked goals like security awareness are always a part of every change rather than an occasional review project.

If your aspiring pre-DevOps organization makes only one decision on a standard, make it this: everyone learns the 10 key principles of AgileNote: I’m not saying anything about Scrum, Chef, stand-up meetings, or the Kanban board that runs my house chores. I’m not talking about actual adoption, timelines, project division, team realignment, or even two-pizza teams. The point is not to be prescriptive in the early stages. Resist the IT urge to go immediately to implementation, resolution, and ticket closure.  Let.. this.. soak.. in.  Dream about how you’d build IT if you could start over without any existing technology or processes. How would you solve the macro requirement: How do I delight humans who use technology? And a final pro tip: Standardization on Agile principles is best done over several sessions as a team, offsite, with adult beverages to go with the pizza.

Turning off Stack Monitoring - Minor help improvement

When configuring a new stackable (but not stacked) switch I came across this message that correctly identified the state of the switch.

SSLink.JPG

(found on the Stack Tab)

The problem is that the Learn more link takes you to a Stack Members page.  No where in that documentation does it talk about enabling/disabling Stack monitoring.

IMHO, the link should lead to a page that gives advice (with pics and an explanation) about removing Stack polling utilizing the "Manage Pollers" page under the "THRESHOLDS & POLLING" section of the "All Settings" menu.  (unless there is a better way to do it)

Test/Development Licenses

Disclaimer: I know that there are other threads on this but I wanted to update it in this new Idea space.

I would really like to have Test/Development licenses for SolarWinds products, at least for the products that we have purchased.  These licenses could be restricted to just a few nodes (like 10ish).

The reasons for this would be having the ability to do the following things in a non-production environment...

  • Testing upgrades
  • Testing different configurations
  • Learning the SolarWinds products for SCP (SolarWinds Certified Professionals)
    • In the case of SCP's I think they should get access to test licenses for all of the SW products to keep current
  • Creating a small training environment
  • Creating a demo environment

I am sure there are other reasons that I have not already thought of, please share if you have them and vote on this idea if you like it!

Unmanage a container

Is it possible to unmanage a container or group?

In SWQL Studio, I look in Orion.Container and see columns for UnManaged, UnManageFrom, and UnManageUntil, similar to Orion.Nodes. Unlike Orion.Nodes, there are no swis verbs for To Unmanage or Remanage a container.

The closest I have come is to use the UpdateContainer verb to disable polling. This works, but I have to build my own scheduling and there's no indication in the web front end that polling is disabled.

In case there is any confusion, I am trying to unmanage the container itself, not the nodes and applications within the container.

How often you need to change the height of chart(s)?

Some people using big screens to monitor their network so more height for charts would be useful (for maps, etc.).

how about you?
